Lesson 8: Ergonomics and incident reporting
Small discomforts become long-term injuries when nobody adjusts the workstation. And small near misses become serious incidents when nobody reports them.
Set up your station
- Work surface at elbow height. Packing benches adjust between 80 and 110 cm.
- Keep frequently used items within forearm reach.
- Alternate tasks every 90 minutes where the rota allows.
- Scanner straps worn across the body, not on one shoulder.
Report a near miss in two minutes
- Open the Northwind Safety app or the kiosk at the zone board.
- Choose “Near miss” or “Hazard”.
- Describe what happened in one or two sentences and add a photo.
- Submit. The zone lead receives it immediately and you get a reference number.
No blameNear-miss reports are never used in performance reviews. The site with the most reports last year also had the fewest injuries.
First aid
First aiders are listed on every zone board with their radio channel. For any injury, however small, log it in the accident book before the end of the shift.
